MEET CARY

I’ve spent my entire life in Racine County, with most of it rooted in Union Grove—the community that shaped who I am and where my children now attend high school.

I was born to young parents who worked hard to provide, with my grandparents playing a significant role in raising me. They instilled in me the values of generosity, humility, and taking care of others—lessons that continue to guide my life and career. I started working at 15 and held multiple jobs throughout my teens and early adulthood, building a strong work ethic that has stayed with me ever since. While working full-time, I pursued my education, earning my Paralegal certification through Carthage College and taking additional coursework to further my career.

In 1999, a radio ad about the need for female deputies led me to apply to the Racine County Sheriff's Office. I passed each step of the process and was hired in 2001. What began as an unexpected opportunity quickly became my passion.

Over the past 25+ years, I’ve served in a variety of roles:

•Jail Division Deputy (including Correctional Emergency Response Team)

•Patrol Deputy

•Investigator specializing in sensitive crimes

•Sergeant (Patrol and Training)

•Lieutenant (Jail and Training Divisions)

•Captain (Support Services and now Operations Division) I also served as a Hostage Negotiator for over a decade, including leading the team as Commander.

A defining milestone in my career was becoming the first female Captain across all law enforcement agencies in Racine County—a moment that meant even more as a mother of twin daughters, showing them what’s possible.

My journey hasn’t been without challenges. Like many, I’ve faced obstacles and learned from difficult moments. I believe strongly that success isn’t about where you start—it’s about perseverance, accountability, and continuing to move forward.

Seeking guidance and support, including counseling, has been an important part of my growth and something I openly encourage for others.

Outside of my career, I am deeply involved in the community. I’m an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where I serve as a lector and Eucharistic minister and help lead major fundraising efforts. I’ve also supported numerous local events, school initiatives, and charitable causes—from youth programs and 4-H to organizations supporting victims and families in need.

I’m the proud mother of three—Nathan, Linzy, and Katie—who are the center of my life and the driving force behind everything I do.
